Description: St. Lawrence is a large Catholic Church located in downtown Asheville on Haywood Street. The structure was erected in 1909 and continues to be in active use by the cities Catholic inhabitants. The Spanish architects of the Church designed it to have two large spires on opposite sides of the main entrance. behind these and covering the main building is probably St. Lawrence's most striking feature, a large dome. This was a specialty of Guastavino and is seen in other examples of his work. This design approach to covering a large space was adopted from ancient Byzantine and Persian building techniques by the architect. The structure is primarily stone, brick and tiles. It is undoubtedly one of the landmarks of the downtown area.
