Description: In 1865 under the influence of Trinity Episcopal Church, Confederate General James Martin and his wife organized the first Episcopal congregation of American Americans in the state of North Carolina. Established in 1865, the church was first known as Freedmens Chapel until 1867 when the name changed to Trinity Chapel. In 1896 the church was renamed the current title of St. Matthias. A day school was erected on land donated by a former slave owner, Tom Patton. The present Church building was built with help from George Vanderbilt who donated materials and workmen.
