| MONTFORD DISTRICT | |
|
"R. S. Smith or his office, surely the preeminent firm
in town at the time, may have designed as many as thirty of the houses in
the Montford district. Many of these are small and simple cottages;
others are pretentious residences with strongly suggested Smith
detail. Though they are far from being alike, the recurrence of many
of the motifs throughout the district weaves a fabric of neighborhood
tradition that was picked up in the work of other architects and
builders. Though they did not by any means always choose to imitate
Smith's artistic motifs, his use of natural materials like stone, stucco,
and shingles, earth colors, and informal composition became an established
vernacular." Montford Area Historic District Inventory |

| Chestnut Hill Historic District | |
| "The first of at least eight houses in the district attributed to architect Richard Sharp Smith (1852-1924) was built about 1896 at 166 E. Chestnut Street...It is impossible to say exactly how many houses in the Chestnut Hill District Smith, or Smith's office, designed. His was the leading firm in town at the turn of the century...What's more, his designs were apparently imitated by local builders such that a Smith-inspired vernacular of sorts came into being." p.4 | |
