Merrimon Avenue Fire Station

300 Merrimon Avenue

1926-27

Like Lewis Memorial Park and the Biltmore Hospital extension, the Merrimon Avenue Fire Station is one of Douglas Ellington's smaller public works. Yet it clearly demonstrates his sensitivity to design, function and location. The central two story element has two arched doorways for fire trucks. Above and between the two truck doors is a small wrought-iron balcony with decorative brick patterns above and below. This central section is flanked by two slightly lower two-story sections. The overall symmetry of the building is broken by a six story tower used for training purposes and to dry hoses.
