Biltmore Hospital Extension -

Imperial Life Insurance Company

14 All Souls Crescent

1929-30

Douglas Ellington was commissioned to design an addition to the Biltmore Hospital. The original building was designed by Richard Sharp Smith. Later another Asheville architect, William H. Lord, remodeled and expanded the Smith building. Unlike his other public buildings, Ellington's addition to Biltmore Hospital, known as the Battle Wing, seemss more traditional. Yet it is a thoroughly modern building, particularly in relation to the original hospital building. The exterior facade is constructed of cut stone and brick arranged in richly nuanced patterns. Like his other public buildings, the entry into the building is clearly delineated, in this case by a arched entry way on the left of the building.

In 1952 the Battle Wing became the headquarters of the Imperial Life Insurance Company. Ellington oversaw the remodeling of the building from a hospital to an office building.
