| Asheville High School was originally located in a building on Orange Street in Asheville. In 1908 the high school moved into a vacated building at 35 Oak Street, former home of the Asheville Female College. In 1916 the high school moved again into temporary quarters at Woodfin and Broadway, while waiting for a new Asheville high school to be built. In 1919 the new Asheville High School was completed and named David Millard High School. It was later known as Asheville Senior High School, as the students were separated into two locations for several years. By the middle 1920's the new David Millard High School had outgrown its facilities and a new high school was planned and designed by Douglas Ellington. This new high school was completed in 1929 and was located on McDowell Street, the current location. The new school was renamed Lee Edwards High School in 1929 for a deceased principal and retained this name until 1969 when, following integration, it became known as Asheville High School, the name it retains today. In 1996 the school was nominated for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. | |
