ASHEVILLE SCHOOL

Founded 1900
Location: Asheville School
360 Asheville School Rd
Asheville, NC 28806
Founded in 1900 by Charles Andrews Mitchell and Newton Mitchell Anderson who came from Ohio, the school was shaped by the experience of the two men in the founding of the University School in Cleveland in 1890. The school was progressive for the early years of the twentieth century and set about preparing the young men enrollees for careers in business or for college.

The original enrollment numbers some fifty young men in grades 5-12. The early grades gave way to enrollment in only the 7th and 8th grades and high school by 1910 and this configuration remained in effect until 1964 when the student body became co-educational and also accepted non-residential students.  Enrollment today is sustained at around 200 students.

The graduates of the institution include sons and daughters of many illustrious families in the Asheville area and from the nation. Surnames such as Seely (Biltmore Industries), Firestone, Ball (Ball canning jars), Johnson (Johnson & Sons Wax), Studebaker, Kimberly (Kimberly-Clarke), and others have been enriched by the excellent preparation provided by this well-known private boarding school.
