Originally called the Asheville Female Seminary and later, Holston Conference Female College, and still later, Asheville College, the early women's institution is a precursor of UNC Asheville.
"The Asheville Female College, President S. N. Barker, is located in handsome buildings situated in most' beautiful grounds, and is widely known as one of the best institutions for the higher education of girls.
