MITCHELL COUNTY

County History: Formed in 1861 from Caldwell, Burke, McDowell, Watauga, and Yancey Counties.  Named for Dr. Elisha Mitchell, professor at the University of North Carolina, who died while exploring Mt. Mitchell which now bears his name.
