 House

Reynolds Mountain Road

1946

Frances Reynolds Oertling, daughter of U.S. Senator Robert "Our Bob" Reynolds, commissioned Douglas Ellington to design a house on Reynolds Mountain. Reynolds retired to this house to live with his daughter after the death of his fifth wife.

The central element of the house has large picture windows and massive flagstone porch. From this central element, a viewer has 270 degree view of Asheville, the French Broad River and the country side to the south.

The house has two side wings that connect at each end of the central element at about a 45 degree angle to follow the curve of the hillside. Another distinctive element of the house is the garage, placed under the porch, with garage doors at each end.
