General Philip Brittain

"...was a man of a strong mind and constitution, and represented his constituents in various public offices; he was elected several times to the Legislature from Buncombe; while there, perhaps his last time, Henderson County was formed, and received its name at his suggestions after 'Old General Henderson,' a worthy citizen of the State.  He was an industrious, enterprising, public spirited man.  He married Sophia, daughter of widow Lewis; raised a large family; and died in 1848 at an advanced age. (1858. Bennett, D. K. Chronology of North Carolina, p. 100.)
